Workshop Description:
This workshop is geared for museum preparators, registrars, curators, and facilities staff who are tasked with installing (or overseeing and arranging for installations) and maintaining outdoor sculpture. Whether your institution currently has outdoor sculpture on site or your institution is considering a gift or purchase, this workshop will address how to plan for installation and how to maintain and care for the artwork. Attendees will gain insight from an experienced rigger into the issues and challenges of installing outdoor sculpture. Additionally, attendees will learn how to preserve and protect their outdoor sculptures. The workshop will also offer a practicum for attendees to learn the basics in cleaning and waxing bronze outdoor sculpture on site at the Briscoe Western Art Museum. The Briscoe has over 25 medium to life-size sculptures in its sculpture garden. Attendees will have the opportunity to clean an object in situ, and learn when, and how often, bronzes should be waxed. These basic steps, with minimal supplies, will provide the necessary tools and knowledge for attendees to care for the works (or potential works) in their collections.
This pre-conference workshop is scheduled to take place before the TAM 2023 Annual Conference in San Antonio. Prospective attendees can register for the workshop independently, without being registered for the rest of the conference.

Briscoe Western Art Museum
Rachel Mauldin has had a varied career within the museum and cultural nonprofit world. In 2019, she joined the Briscoe Western Art Museum in San Antonio as the Collections Manager/Registrar. In her first year, she completed a physical inventory of the museum’s permanent collection and loans. Prior to her work at the Briscoe, she established Rachel Mauldin Art Services where she assisted with projects for museums, government entities and businesses in San Antonio, Corpus Christi and Austin. From 2005-2016, she held several positions with the American Research Center in Egypt. While with ARCE, she developed and implemented the training curriculum on basic museum registration for a three-year project at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. From 1993-2005, she was the Registrar at the San Antonio Museum of Art. While there she was involved in two building expansions and oversaw the installation of 46,000 square feet of gallery space.
Emily Wilkinson
Director for Public Art
Texas Tech University System
Emily Wilkinson is the Public Art Director for the Texas Tech University System, joining the department in early 2014. Working with a committee, Wilkinson oversees the Public Art Collection and Program at the Texas Tech University System, which solicits, evaluates, and commissions original public artworks to complement construction projects undertaken by the Office of Facilities Planning & Construction. She also handles the upkeep, maintenance, and public education of the artworks in the collection. Prior to her role as Public Art Director, Wilkinson was the Helen DeVitt Jones Endowed Manager of Education for the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock, Texas. She also has worked as a museum educator for the Lubbock Lake Landmark, Museum of Texas Tech University and the Science Spectrum and OMNI Theater. Wilkinson holds two master's degrees from Texas Tech University—one in museum science and another in education and is currently working on her PhD in Higher Education Administration. She is currently a member of the City of Lubbock’s Cultural Arts Grant Review Committee, a Councilor-at-Large on the Texas Association of Museums’ Board of Directors, and a contributing writer to Lubbock Moms.
