The Texas State Library and Archives Commission has an opening for this full-time position:

Archivist I-III

(Commensurate with Experience)  - $3,200-$4,400 monthly

This archivist position will be engaged in appraisal, accessioning, processing, and describing government records and manuscripts in all formats (including electronic) and providing reference support. Depending on the length of your experience (internship/capstone/volunteer experience counts!), from six months to three years, you will be qualified to be hired at the Archivist I, II, or III level. This position offers an excellent opportunity for recent advanced-degree graduates and early-career archivists to establish and broaden skills in these essential archival functions.

GENERAL SUMMARY

Performs routine (journey-level) archival work. Work involves organizing, analyzing, and preserving records, archives, and manuscripts; preparing basic inventories, indexes, guides, and aids to facilitate access to information; and conducting research. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

Organizes and processes government records and manuscripts in various formats including electronic
Prepares indexes, inventories, EAD/DACS compliant finding aids, and catalog records in accordance with accepted standards
Researches, reviews, and appraises government records and manuscript collections in all formats for archival value; recommends appropriate disposition; reviews records retention schedule appraisals
Facilitates transfers of archival records from state agencies and donations of manuscript materials from individuals and prepares accession records
Provides basic reference, research, and technical assistance to State Archives customers in person, by phone, or mail
May review records for information excepted from the Public Information Act and assist with redaction of restricted records, which may include disturbing images or information
Prepares and presents reports formally or informally, in person or in writing
Attends work regularly and in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies
Complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures, including safety and standards of conduct

NON-ESSENTIAL TASKS

Assists with division outreach efforts including exhibits and social media posts
Performs basic collection preservation, holdings maintenance, and relocation as required
May serve on internal committees
Performs other duties as assigned

Archivist II - $3400 - $4000

GENERAL SUMMARY

Performs moderately complex (journey-level) archival work. Work involves collecting, organizing, analyzing, and preserving records, archives, and manuscripts; preparing inventories, indexes, guides, and aids to facilitate access to information; and conducting research. May provide guidance to others. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Prepares indexes, inventories, EAD/DACS compliant finding aids, and catalog records in accordance with accepted standards
Researches, reviews, and appraises government records and manuscript collections in all formats for archival value; recommends appropriate disposition; reviews records retention schedule appraisals
Facilitates transfers of archival records from state agencies and donations of manuscript materials from individuals; prepares accession records
Provides professional reference, research, and technical assistance to State Archives customers in person, by phone, or mail; reviews records for information excepted from the Public Information Act
Performs collection preservation holdings maintenance, and relocation as required; identifies and recommends candidates for conservation treatment
Prepares and digitizes archival records, and creates metadata for digital surrogates
Researches the provenance of records and artifacts; may assist in replevin efforts
Attends work regularly in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
Complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures, including safety and standards of conduct.

NON-ESSENTIAL TASKS

Assists in developing and conducting outreach presentations
Assists in the preparation of reports, manuals, publications, and exhibits
May train other archivists on routine job functions
May serve on internal committees
Performs other duties as assigned

Archivist III - $4000 - $4400

GENERAL SUMMARY

Performs highly complex (senior level) archival work. Work involves examining state and local government records; recommending disposal and destruction of records of no archival importance; analyzing and arranging records, archives, and manuscripts; preparing finding aids to facilitate access to information; and assisting those conducting research and making specific records, documents, and information available or locating other reference materials. May train others. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

Organizes and processes archival collections in various formats including electronic documents.
Prepares indexes, inventories, EAD/DACS compliant finding aids, and catalog records in accordance with accepted standards
Researches, reviews, and appraises government records and manuscript collections in all formats for archival value; recommends appropriate disposition; reviews records retention schedule appraisals.
Facilitates transfers of archival records from state agencies and donations of manuscript materials from individuals; prepares accession records.
Provides professional reference, research, and technical assistance to State Archives customers in person, by phone, or mail; reviews records for restrictions under the Texas Public Information Act and drafts OAG opinion requests
Performs collection preservation holdings maintenance, and relocation as required; identifies and recommends candidates for conservation treatment; consults with conservator
Recommends candidates for digitization; may prepare and digitize archival records and create metadata for digital surrogates
Researches the provenance of records and artifacts; may assist in replevin efforts; serves as subject area expert
Collects, evaluates, analyzes, and uses data to prepare statistics, reports, and guides.; assists in the development of policies, procedures, reports, manuals, and publications
May serve as team lead
Attends work regularly in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies
Complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures, including safety and standards of conduct

NON-ESSENTIAL TASKS

Assists in developing and conducting outreach presentations and exhibits

May serve on internal or external committees or working groups

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working with database or archival content management systems
Experience using DACS, EAD, XML, and MARC
Experience conducting research or assisting others in an archive setting
Experience processing state government records and producing finding aids
Experience accessioning archival materials
Experience appraising government records or manuscript collections.
Experience processing electronic records
Knowledge of the Texas Public Information Act
Coursework in Texas history and/or government
Certified Archivist designation
Digital Archives Specialist certificate

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

College transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) must be submitted at the time of application
Submission of a finding aid developed solely by the applicant must be received at the time of the application
Criminal history check will be required upon contingent offer
Occasional overtime work, including nights and weekends may be required

SUPERVISION

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree from an accredited school with a major in History, Government, Library Science or related discipline, and coursework in archival administration.
Two years’ experience in the appraisal, arrangement and description of archives and manuscripts.
Experience using word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications
Ability to collect, organize, research, and interpret information from various sources and to compose descriptive narratives that are clear, concise, and grammatically correct.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Ability to work semi-independently and to exercise professional judgment.
Ability to move boxes weighing up to 40 pounds
Ability to work in a team environment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Work experience using DACS, EAD, XML, and MARC
Work experience conducting research or assisting others in an archive setting
Experience processing state government records and producing EAD/DACS compliant finding aids
Experience accessioning archival materials
Experience appraising government records or manuscript collections.
Experience processing electronic records
Experience working with database or archival content management system
Experience preparing, digitizing and adding metadata to archival records
Ability to develop or deliver basic archival training and present information to groups
Knowledge of Texas history and government.
Knowledge of the Texas Public Information Act.
Certified Archivist designation

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

College transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) must be submitted at the time of application
Submission of three technical writing samples at time of application, including at least one finding aid developed solely by the applicant.
Criminal history check will be required upon contingent offer

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience producing EAD/DACS compliant finding aids for complex records/collections
Experience accessioning archival materials
Experience working with database or archival content management system

Ability to collect, organize, research, and interpret information from various sources and to compose descriptive narratives
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Ability to work independently and to exercise professional judgment
Ability to move boxes weighing up to 40 pounds
