The Museum Registrar (Collections Manager), working in collaboration with the registrar and under the supervision of the associate director for curatorial affairs, manages all aspects of collections care following professional museum standards and practices for the art, ethnology, and history (including clothing and textiles, furniture, tools, decorative arts, wagons and automobiles) curatorial areas.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Directly manages the maintenance and handling, use and access, security, environmental monitoring objects and facilities, and object-based database development for the collection.  Prepares annual budgets for collections management activities.
  • Collaborates on exhibition planning, including preparing budgets, compiles checklists and images of objects for exhibitions, publications, and research.  Is responsible for preparing objects for exhibition and assists in installations and de-installations.  Monitors security and condition of objects on exhibition.
  • In collaboration with other museum staff, determines appropriate object preparation methods for exhibitions and storage procedures. Established object conservation priorities and plans/implements appropriate storage conditions of all works in the collection.
  • Manages database development and data entry for all collections records.  Is responsible for system security, digitization of object images, periodic software upgrades, metadata development and database search capabilities.
  • Perform research on objects in the collection for inclusion in records and databases; including provenance research in coordination with curators, senior staff, and director.
  • Assists in preparing proposals and grant applications for collections based projects.
  • Interacts with national and international scholarly and museum community, responding to research and publication requests relating to the collection.  Interacts with potential donors and other museum patrons to negotiate gifts to the collection. Provides and supervises access to collection for research and exhibitions.
  • Collaborates with other departments (curatorial, public programming, marketing, education, etc.) to develop ways to engage the community through the Museum’s collection.
  • May curate exhibitions as required. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in history, art history, museum studies or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of related experience in museum registration or collections management.
  • Knowledge of American Alliance of Museums (AAM) standard museum principles and practices; Microsoft Office applications, collection management software; proofreading.
  • Detail oriented; self-starter; works well on own problem solving skills; good communication skills.
  • Ability to move medium weight items (most likely 20 pounds or less).  Ability to handle material which may contain dust or microscopic mold spores.

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • MA in museum studies or collection care.
  • Five to seven (5-7) years of museum registration or collection management experience.
  • Knowledge of Vernon Systems collection management database.
