Professional Bio
Committed to culture and its ability to connect communities, Aleida Garcia is a native of the RGV with 20 years of cultural arts leadership and administrative experience. She is the director of both the Cultural Arts Department for the City of San Benito and the Cultural Heritage Museum.
Garcia holds a BFA from UTPA. Early in her professional career, Garcia helped to open Sala Arte, one of the first contemporary art galleries in McAllen, TX. As Gallery Director, she featured work from RGV artists and initiated a young collector's forum. In 2006, as Program Coordinator for the Brownsville Heritage Complex, Garcia hosted book signings, coordinated traveling and long term exhibitions, and helped to provide culturally rich programming and events to the community.
During her eight-year tenure as Registrar at the IMAS, Garcia managed a permanent collection of over 10,000 objects. She oversaw and facilitated multiple major museum exhibitions, including international exhibitions from Mexico. At IMAS, Garcia also led a technology team to assess and update the overall hardware and software, successfully bringing the collections, donor, and membership databases up to standard.
In 2014, Garcia worked as an independent collections management consultant. In addition to managing several private art collections, Garcia was hired as a Curatorial Assistant charged with organizing, documenting, and maintaining the permanent art collection of UTRGV.
Garcia served as Director and Curator of Titan Studio and Exhibit Space in downtown Harlingen, Texas from September 2014 through March 2020. As a working studio for Garcia and her husband, sculptor Brian Wedgworth, Titan Studio’s Exhibit Space functioned as an alternative space that features rotating exhibitions by regional guest artists, expanding the contemporary art landscape of the RGV by providing a professional space to create, explore, and experiment without the restrictions of a formal gallery setting.
