Organization Overview

The goal of the Gelman Stained Glass Museum in San Juan, Texas is to provide a transcendental experience for their visitors to enjoy that can only be achieved through a sacred environment. What makes their museum so special is that they have constructed the entire museum, from its architecture to the interior space, to replicate a cathedral. They are the only museum in the world to solely be constructed to replicate the Latin-cross cruciform architecture. Everything on display comes from various religious institutions throughout the United States, dating back to the late nineteenth century. All of our windows consist of choice specimens from renown stained-glass manufacturers such as Louis Comfort Tiffany, John La Farge, J & R Lamb Studios, Mary Tillinghast, and F.X. Meyer, etc. With over 174 window sets on display, not only are they the largest stained glass exhibit in Texas, but the largest/most comprehensive stained glass exhibit in the United States. Additionally, what sets them apart from other institutions, is how the acquisition of their collection has contributed greatly to the various communities throughout the United States in fulfilling the church’s purpose in whatever means they see fit: feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, and/or opening their doors to those in need of spiritual services. After six years of construction, and a collection that has amassed over 30 years, the museum is now open.
