The Heritage Society (THS) at Sam Houston Park is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating Houston’s diverse history. Through historic buildings, exhibitions, and educational programs, THS connects the community with the city’s rich cultural heritage.
🎯 Position Purpose
The Accountant is responsible for overseeing the accounting and finance operations of THS. This role ensures financial integrity, compliance, and strategic fiscal planning to support the organization’s mission.
📊 Primary Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Analyze financial data and prepare timely, accurate reports.
- Collaborate with CPA firm for annual financial review and Form 990 preparation.
- Partner with the endowment committee to manage the organization’s endowment.
- Ensure proper revenue recognition across multiple streams (tours, admissions, gift shop, campaigns, events, grants).
- Lead annual budgeting and planning process.
- Manage cash flow, deposits, accounts receivable/payable, and credit card reconciliations.
- Oversee payroll, employee changes, and benefits.
- Prepare monthly financial statements for leadership and board review.
- Submit quarterly expense reimbursement requests to the City of Houston.
Compliance & Operations
- Ensure compliance with IRS, Texas Comptroller, and other regulatory filings.
- Maintain accurate financial records, chart of accounts, and general ledger.
- Oversee vendor/contractor payments and issue Form 1099s.
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations.
- Manage insurance compliance and policy administration.
- Uphold financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Strategic & Leadership
- Advise Executive Director and Board of Directors on fiscal strategy.
- Provide leadership and guidance to the Finance Committee.
🛠Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong background in nonprofit or small business accounting.
- Proficiency with QuickBooks, Workforce timekeeping, DonorView, FareHarbor, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of SFAS, GAAP, and 501(c)(3) compliance.
- Attention to detail, confidentiality, and deadline orientation.
- Ability to manage large datasets and automate financial processes.
- Experience with audits and financial reporting.
🎓 Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Tax.
- 5–10 years of accounting/finance non-profit experience.
- Demonstrated experience with nonprofit financial reporting (501(c)(3)).
- Preferred: Background in nonprofit, tourism, or museum sectors.
💼 Compensation & Schedule
- Part-time position (20 hours per week). $35 per hour, non-exempt. At 20 hours, annualized at $36,400.
- Flexible scheduling with some on-site requirements at Sam Houston Park.
