Archivist II (Appraisal and Processing Archivist)

$3,400 - $4,000 monthly

These two archivist positions will be focused on the appraisal of government records in all formats (including electronic) and accessioning of records appraised as archival, along with arrangement and description of archival government records. These positions offer an excellent opportunity for early-career archivists with one year of prior experience in appraisal and two years' experience in arrangement and description to apply and broaden their skills in these essential archival functions.

GENERAL SUMMARY
Performs moderately complex (journey-level) archival work. Work involves collecting, organizing, analyzing, and preserving records, archives, and manuscripts; preparing inventories, indexes, guides, and aids to facilitate access to information; and conducting research. May provide guidance to others. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL TASKS
Researches, reviews, and appraises government records and manuscript collections in all formats for archival value; recommends appropriate disposition; reviews records retention schedule appraisals
Facilitates transfers of archival records from state agencies and donations of manuscript materials from individuals; prepares accession records
Reviews materials to identify information excepted from disclosure under the Public Information Act
Organizes and processes archival collections in various formats including electronic documents
Prepares indexes, inventories, EAD/DACS compliant finding aids, and catalog records in accordance with accepted standards
Attends work regularly in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies
Complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures, including safety and standards of conduct

NON-ESSENTIAL TASKS
Performs collection preservation holdings maintenance, and relocation as required; identifies and recommends candidates for conservation treatment
Assists in the preparation of reports, manuals, publications, and exhibits
May provide assistance to State Archives reference staff
May train other archivists on routine job functions
May serve on internal committees
Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree from an accredited school with a major in History, Government, Library Science or related discipline, and coursework in archival administration
Two years’ experience in the arrangement and description of archives and/or manuscripts
One year’s experience in the appraisal of archival materials
Work experience using DACS, EAD, XML, and MARC
Experience using word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications
Ability to collect, organize, research, and interpret information from various sources and to compose descriptive narratives that are clear, concise, and grammatically correct
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Ability to work semi-independently and to exercise professional judgment
Ability to move boxes weighing up to 40 pounds
Ability to work in a team environment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience processing state government records and producing EAD/DACS compliant finding aids
Experience appraising government records or manuscripts  
Experience accessioning archival materials
Experience using DACS, EAD, XML and MARC
Experience processing electronic records
Experience working with an archival content management system, preferably ArchivesSpace
Knowledge of Texas history and government
Experience with the Texas Public Information Act
Certified Archivist designation
Digital Archives Specialist certificate

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
College transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) must be submitted at the time of application
Submission of three technical writing samples at time of application, including at least one appraisal report and one finding aid developed solely by the applicant
Criminal history check will be required upon contingent offer
Occasional overtime work, including nights and weekends may be required
