Job Description:

Job Responsibilities

35% - Leadership and LSU/Board/Cadet Relations:
-Execute the strategic plan for the Museum as developed by LSU and the Museum Board of Governors
-Maintain relations with LSU, Museum Board of Governors, and Board of Cadets of the Ole War Skule (Boards)
-Ensure by effective leadership and management, that the day-to-day operations and programs of the Museum are professionally and efficiently administered
-Enhance the Museum's role as a teaching and research resource; ensure integration of exhibition and education objectives; build relationships with LSU's academic units

25% - Fundraising/Development (Public Relations, Outreach, and Marketing):
-Establish and maintain donor relations (individual and business partners/sponsor relations, key civic leaders)
-Coordinate public relations in conjunction with LSU and Boards (print, audio-visual, website, digital content, and social media, within LSU and the community)
-Recommend and conduct special events and fund-raising opportunities based on the determined short- and long-term funding needs in the context of the Museum's strategic and programmatic goals
-Seek contributions and naming opportunities

15% - Collections:
-Assist in the securing and acknowledgment of artifacts
-Assist in collection display recommendations and rotation
-Assure proper collection handling and safekeeping

15% - Finance/Audit:
-Oversee and control the financial records of the Museum and Cadets of the Ole War Skule
-Coordinate with LSU’s Office of Finance and Administration and the LSU Foundation to assure all financial matters are maintained consistent with LSU policies and procedures
-Supervise the development and maintenance of an annual action plan and the financial budgets of the Museum and Cadets of the Ole War Skule

5% - Building/Property/Grounds:
-Coordinate with LSU Facility and Property Oversight the upkeep and maintenance of the museum building and property
-Ensure insurance needs are satisfied

5% - Other Duties as Required 

Minimum Qualifications

Education Level - Masters (specific focus - Art, Art History, or a closely associated field)

Years of Experience - 5

Specific Experience:

-At least 5 years of experience in building permanent collections in an art museum and developing exhibition and education programs
-Demonstrated history of executing a successful fundraising operation that builds community trust along with financial security.
-Excellent oral and written communication skills, computer literacy, and the ability to use the current technology to further the museum's educational and artistic goals.

Preferred Qualifications:

-An advanced degree in art history, art, or a field closely associated with the director's duties from an accredited school
-Broad knowledge of the arts and commitment to museum best practices
-Experience in developing and maintaining public/private partnerships
-Strong fiscal skills with experience in preparing and maintaining budgets of $1,000,000 or greater preferred.
-Experience in building institutional identity, including clear and initiative-taking brand vision.

Essential Personnel -This position may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.

Cash Handling -This position has access to/directly handles cash. Financial history/credit check required per FASOP HR-04.

FERPA -As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health-related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students, or the appropriate law enforcement agency. Special Instructions:

The Director will report to the VP of Strategy, with oversight from the LSU Military Museum’s (Museum) Board of Governors on matters relating to the Museum, and advice from the Director of the Cadets of the Ole War Skule on matters relating to that organization. The Director will provide leadership, vision, and direction to the Museum by developing awareness and creating relationships that will result in increased financial support, private and public partnerships, and positive heightened public recognition. The Director will demonstrate a commitment to promoting the value of a historic military museum in a research university setting. The Director will need to be a visible and energetic spokesperson and ambassador for the Museum, LSU, and Cadets of the Ole War Skule. The Director should have a broad knowledge of the arts, the museum world, and key players nationally with the ability to capitalize on those relationships for the overall benefit of the Museum.
