 Executive Director Job Description 

The Dallas Jewish Historical Society (DJHS) was founded in 1973 to preserve and protect collections of written, visual and audible materials that document the history of the Dallas Jewish Community, to make these materials available to the public and researchers, and to keep the past as a living legacy for our community. The DJHS is noted for its extensive archive, which includes hundreds of oral histories of Dallas Jews as well as various print, photographic materials, personal collections, and other items. 

DJHS is looking for a highly skilled Executive Director to help continue fulfilling its mission and vision. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will oversee the strategies and operations of programs and staff. This seasoned leader will also have experience in developing and implementing a successful fundraising plan. Experience in hiring and managing staff is essential, and established relationships with local community groups is a plus. Above all, the Executive Director should be highly effective in a leadership role that requires clear communication skills, vision, and decisiveness. 

Objectives of this role 

  • Work closely with Board of Directors and committees to assess and address issues affecting the organization. With the Board, develop a vision for the future of DJHS. 

  • Oversee daily operations of the organization, providing direction for program strategies, collecting priorities, community engagement, staff management and more.  

  • Increase awareness of the organization by being the primary spokesperson and liaison with the broader community. 

  • Develop and maintain relationships with funders, including individuals and foundations.  

 

Responsibilities 

  • Create business plans for achieving goals and objectives set in collaboration with the Board of Directors. 

  • Meet aggressive annual fundraising and membership goals, in partnership with Board of Directors by securing financial support from foundations, corporations, individual donors, and government funding sources. Work with staff and board on annual fundraising event and additional events. 

  • Oversee all external communications, including website, marketing collateral, newsletters, and social media. 

  • Serve as the face of the organization and participate in external events to increase visibility, credibility, market brand, and develop strategic partnerships to further increase community awareness. 

  • Work with staff who are dedicated to fulfilling the organization’s mission through highly successful programs, community engagement and fundraising. Provide timely performance feedback and conduct annual performance reviews.      

  

Required skills and qualifications 

  • Five or more years of experience in senior management, preferably with nonprofit organizations. 

  • Strong experience in public relations, marketing, and fundraising. 

  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles for nonprofit organizations. 

  • Proven success working with a Board of Directors. 

  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with innovative approach to business planning. 

  • Dynamic and charismatic team player who enjoys being the public face of an organization. 

 

Preferred skills and qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in non-profit management, business or human resources. 

  • Experience in managing budgets and understanding CRM applications. 

  • Exceptional verbal, written, and visual communication skills. 

  • Existing working relationships within the Dallas Jewish Community. 

  • Able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without accommodation. 

 

Terms 

This position is full-time with benefits (health, dental, vision) and a salary range of $70,000-75,000. Flexible schedule available, but the majority of hours must be during DJHS business hours (9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday) and at the office. Some evenings and weekends required.
