Overview:
The New Braunfels Railroad Museum, located in the heart of downtown New Braunfels, Texas, is seeking an enthusiastic, visionary Executive Director to lead the organization into its next chapter of growth and impact. Open since 1989, the museum includes a historic railroad depot, full-size static railcar displays and an event rental space. The Executive Director will work closely with the New Braunfels Historic Railroad and Modeling Society Board of Directors and report to the President of the NBHRMS. The Executive Director manages the operation of the Railroad Museum, including exhibits, collection management, educational programs, fundraising, staff, and volunteers.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
- Partner with the Board of Directors to develop and execute long-range strategic plans. Keep the Board fully informed about the Museum's progress.
- Develop and implement policies for the Museum to meet professional standards, such as ethics policies, collections management, financial procedures, and disaster response.
- Serve as the Museum's chief ambassador, strengthening its reputation and visibility within the community.
- Cultivate productive relationships with community leaders, businesses, foundations, and government agencies.
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors to prepare a budget, ensure adherence to the budget, and maintain accurate financial records for financial stability and sustainability.
- Design and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies, including grant writing, donor relations, corporate sponsorship, and special events.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations and maintain transparency in financial and operational reporting.
- Plan, direct, and supervise daily operation of Museum including gift shop, admission, facility rentals, and maintenance and installation of exhibits. Ensure efficiency, safety, and adherence to best practices.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate staff, including planning, prioritizing, and assigning tasks, and monitor work performance. Recruit, train, and organize volunteers.
- Prepare, manage and retain records of inventories, gifts, donations, exhibits, artifacts, sales, taxes, and other reports. Submit regular reports to the Board of Directors on the progress of the Museum.
- Oversee all email, website and social media platforms and coordinate interesting and engaging content on a regular basis.
- Provide stewardship of the museum property ensuring the facilities, grounds and collections of the Museum are well maintained and safe.
- Oversee collections management to integrate exhibits and interpretive materials consistent with the museum's mission and goals. Manage care and use of historic objects to ensure proper handling, display, and storage of the museum collection.
- Create and implement community engagement programs that encourage enthusiasm with the visiting public.
- Provide information to the public and special interest groups through presentations and participation in/on a variety of meetings, events, and committees within the community.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in History, Museum Studies, Education, Business Administration or a related field, or 5 years of equivalent experience.
- Previous experience in nonprofit management, a museum or preservation work with an understanding of collections and exhibit development, fundraising, grant writing, nonprofit financial oversight, board relations and compliance requirements.
- Knowledge and experience in a supervisory or managerial position.
- Bookkeeping or basic accounting skills. Experience with budget oversight.
- Excellent communication, relationship-building and community partnership skills.
- A working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, bookkeeping software such as QuickBooks, and basic website management and social media platforms.
- Visionary leadership with strong strategic thinking, leadership and organizational skills.
- Ability to pass a background check may be required.
Compensation:
Salary commensurate with experience, $55-60,000 plus health care.
