Job Description: The Exhibits Technician is responsible for all technical aspects of museum external exhibit maintenance and restoration program activities in Heritage Park, a 9-acre outside display field where seven fixed-wing aircraft are displayed as well as other historical objects. Under the supervision of the Director of Exhibits and Facilities, the Exhibits Technician will be the leader of a group of volunteers and occasional staff that will take on the restoration of objects in Heritage Park on a project by project basis. The Exhibits Technician will report directly to the Director of Exhibits and Facilities to determine which project they will be tasked with as well as to submit a report covering timelines, budgetary concerns, and personnel.  

 

The Exhibits Technician makes periodic assessments of the condition of outdoor displays. This position will work on occasion with the Director of Development in an effort to fundraise for projects, and this may include speaking about its importance to constituent groups and raising support, both financial and in-kind support, to meet the need. The Exhibits Technician develops all budgets, schedules and aspects of the work pertaining to Heritage Park. This person oversees and assists with restoration such as surface preparations and painting, equipment movement, reconditioning, fabrication and will sometimes work at heights above the ground in outdoor conditions.  

 

The Exhibits Technician will help to oversee contracted work as needed. Additionally, they will work with the museum Volunteer Coordinator to assemble teams of volunteers to complete outdoor projects. This position may need to, at times, lead separate groups of volunteer teams working on separate tasks at once. This positions duties entail working outdoors much of the time so ability to work in an open, exposed construction area following common safety practices is critical as is experience with environmental compliance in safe use of materials and workplace safety. The Exhibits Technician will oversee the security of the area as it related to the work performed in Heritage Park, they will also be a part of the exhibits and facilities team at the museum which may include working with the Facilities Coordinator to assist in completion of a task or working with the Director of Exhibits on inside exhibitions as needed. All tasks and jobs will be assigned by the Director of Exhibits and Facilities.  

 

This is a full-time position of 40 hours per week. This position may occasionally be required to deviate from a usual weekday schedule to work on Saturday as needed.  

 

Requirements: The Exhibits Technician will have at least two years experience with restoration and have knowledge of basic construction techniques, strong project management skills, and have a passion for creative solutions, a high degree of personal energy, and possess great communications and interpersonal skills. Must be exceptionally well organized and able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced museum environment with multiple projects. This position will participate in exhibitions department team meetings or other meetings as requested by the Director of Exhibits and Facilities.  

 

Desired: 

  • A 4 year Bachelors or Masters degree from an accredited university 
  • Background in Museum, non-profit or public service field 
  • Automotive sanding and painting expertise 
  • Metalworking and woodworking experience 
  • Experience using heavy machinery and tools 
  • Experience using computer software such as Microsoft suite

Salary and Benefits: This is a permanent full-time hourly position, and it is supported by major medical, dental, vision, 401k retirement savings program benefits. Salary is $35,000 annually.
