Position Summary: The Head of School Programs (HSP) reports to the Museum Director and as part of the Bullock's Leadership and Interpretation teams leads school programs by managing research, development, implementation, and evaluation of age- appropriate programming for student and teacher audiences, supporting the Museum as a critical partner of K-12 educators. Guided by the Bullock's strategy and sustainability goals, the HSP and their team lead and participate in annual and long-range vision planning for onsite and online learning opportunities and resources designed to cultivate and foster curriculum-relevant experiences that support Texas state education standards (TEKS).
The HSP balances best practices in formal and informal education, scholarship, and accessible guest experiences, and works cross-departmentally with Operations, Communications, and Exhibition teams to ensure the best possible experience for field trips andeducator workshops. They may also provide consultation for college-level educators, students, and pre-service teachers including in-service training. The HSP is a creative, outgoing, detail-focused, organized team collaborator who understands that history touches every field, and who is able to integrate social studies, literature, history, science, art, and music in the creation of programs. They are able to work in a fast-paced environment and adjust to changing priorities as needed. The Head of School Programs invests in and commits to a work environment that values the Museum's mission and core values. The HSP works a 40 hour work week, but schedule may vary depending on evening and weekend events. Performs all other duties as assigned. *Must be able to work with agency's 360 day-per-year schedule and may include weekends, evenings and holidays, including working on short notice.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides direct supervision of Education Program Specialists, Field Trips Reservationist, and School Programs Manager who has oversight of the Distance Learning Educators, including, but not limited to time management, short and long-ranging playing, annual evaluations, skill-set and leadership training, and day-to-day assignments.
- Oversees the planning, development, implementation, and assessment of all activities for K-12 audiences with particular attention to Field Trip audiences, and as opportunities arise, college-level curriculum support.
- Develops yearly calendar of exceptional school programming, including summertime and school breaks based on available resources.
- Researches and builds team understanding of the needs, interests, and concerns of educators and administrators to ensure the Bullock's offerings retain a measurable return on investment, are relevant to educators, and reflect best practices in the field of museum education.
- Leads the Education Program Manager in the evaluation of Distance Learning (DL) including technical and programmatic oversight, class development, and audience outreach. Works closely with curators to ensure historical accuracy.
- Represents and presents on the Bullock's offerings during professional conferences and for press/media assignments.
- Oversees the Texas State History Museum Foundation Field Trip scholarships.
- Manages and cultivates relationships with local and statewide schools and organizations to position the museum as a partner in education.
- Manages purchases and procurement according to state policy and procedures. Prepares annual school program budget and oversees its management, tracking expenditures and revenue monthly and providing guidance to team members.
- Contributes to exhibition and film planning with a cohesive approach to field trip and DL programs that integrates the Museum's exhibitions and documentary film offerings.
- Develops, leads, and promotes educator workshops and professional development programs for CPE credit. Collaborates with community and educational organizations to offer resources and approaches for deeper dives into curriculum content and classroom tools.
- Partners with local universities to career and resource programs for pre-service educators.
- Strategizes with the Museum's Operations and Communications departments to market programs, maximize attendance, and present the Museum as a continually changing destination for students and teachers.
- Performs all other duties that promote public confidence in the agency and its employees in accordance with the agency's high ethical standards.
General Qualifications and Requirements:
- Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a major in Museum Studies or Education.
- Master’s degree in museum studies, education, or related.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ supervisory experience leading educational programs in a cultural institution or museum setting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Regulatory Knowledge – Acquires in-depth knowledge of the agency's mission, programs, exhibits, and stakeholders.
- Managerial or Leadership Skills – Knowledge of management and supervisory methods, performance and productivity standards. Skill-set to continually assess the effectiveness of programming through formal and non-formal evaluation; oversee data collection of surveys and make recommendations to adjust programming based on audience feedback and the changing needs of the community; uses tracked data to strategize ways to increase capacity, improve programs, and reach new audiences.
- Safety and Collaboration skills - Skill to contribute to the Bullock's Emergency planning process as a safety advocate for school groups. Ability to collaborate with Museum staff and other agency divisions as needed to fulfill assigned duties.
- Communication skills - Ability to display sound judgment and effective interpersonal skills in communicating with internal and external stakeholders, including Agency and Texas State History Museum Foundation colleagues.
- Reasoning and Analytical Skills - Ability to gather, assemble, correlate, analyze and report facts; devise and negotiate effective solutions and outcomes to problems. Ability to adhere to all agency policies and procedures, and to all SPB procurement rules and regulations.
- Attendance - Regular prompt attendance is an essential job duty for all State Preservation Board positions. May be required to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
- Technology skills - Serve effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team and responsive to stakeholders input; demonstrates advanced personal computer and software proficiency.
- Travel and/or Schedule – Availability for after-hour and weekend work may be required.
- Physical Abilities - Ability to stand and/or walk for extended hours. Ability to sit in a desk for extended hours at a time, up to 8 hours per day.
