MUSEUM EDUCATION INTERN (Fall-Spring Semesters)

POSITION INFORMATION

• Reports to: Education & Volunteer Programs Coordinator
• Compensation: $17.50 per hour
• Schedule: Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 8:00am–2:30pm
• Duration: September-May
• Hours: With occasional optional hours for events and programs

POSITION SUMMARY

Historic Mesquite, Inc. (HMI) seeks an enthusiastic Museum Education Intern to support field trips and other education programming at Opal Lawrence Historical Park. The intern will deliver engaging, age-appropriate experiences for elementary students through tours, storytelling, and hands-on demonstrations. In addition, they will also assist the Education & Volunteer Programs Coordinator with developing the upcoming summer camp program.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Field Trip Programming

• Assist with leading multiple field trips a week, including set-up, facilitating education stations, tear-down, and inventorying supplies.
• Use inquiry, storytelling, and simple interpretive methods with children.
• Maintain student safety and protect historic collections and spaces.
• Provide general information and support program flow.
• Support volunteer tour guides as necessary.

Programming Development

• Under direction of Education & Volunteer Programs Coordinator, assist with developing upcoming summer camp programs for the museum.
• Research topics and trends applicable to the scope of the museum.
• Write curriculum and guides for camp programming.
• Source and budget for needed supplies.

Training, Research & Preparation

• Participate in training sessions, including CPR/AED certification.
• Study interpretive scripts, lesson plans, and history materials.
• Adjust content based on guidance from Education & Volunteer Programs Coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Currently enrolled or just graduated from a college program studying Museum Sciences, Library Sciences, Education, History, or another related field.
• Experience working with children preferred.
• Strong communication and public speaking skills.
• Friendly, reliable, and enthusiastic about learning history.
• Ability to stand/walk for long periods; climb steps; lift up to 20 lbs.
• Must pass a background check.
• CPR/AED certified or willing to become certified.
