President and Texas History Program Director for the Summerlee Foundation

The Summerlee Foundation was created by Annie Lee Warren Roberts, a philanthropist, historical and animal rights advocate, and Texas native. Ms. Roberts married Summerfield G. Roberts and they prospered in the banking, oil, and real estate sectors. In 1988 She founded the Summerlee Foundation, which is dedicated to support of Texas history and the alleviation of fear, pain, and suffering of animals.

The President serves as the ambassador for the foundation and is responsible for managing the annual budget and interfacing between the Board of Directors and the financial advising firm that guides the Foundation’s $80 million investment portfolio Working in regular collaboration with the Director of Administration, the President ensures that good governance and best practices are followed in accounting, annual audits, compliance and regulatory reporting, policy, and other general day-to-day operations. The President also serves as the Program Director for Texas History and provides general oversight for the Animal Protection Program to maintain consistency with the mission of the Foundation and the intentions of the founder.

As President, responsibilities include coordinating and facilitating three board meetings each year and board committees and ensuring that the Directors have the grant application materials, financial reports, and other materials for policy decisions. The President represents the Foundation in public and is expected to be active in relevant foundation and Texas history organizations and to maintain a network of contacts in the history and foundation communities. The President is also responsible for staying abreast of programs and activities involving the Animal Protection Program.

The Summerlee Foundation staff consists of the President and Texas History Program Director, the Director of Administration (both positions are in Dallas, Texas) and the Director of Animal Protection (who offices in Seattle, Washington).

The President works independently as Program Director for Texas History, responsible for administration, grant and data management, and coordination of the program’s related activities, such as grantee communications, consultation with eligible grant seekers, and review, investigation, evaluation, and recommendation of grant proposals to the Board of Directors. Considerable travel is required for site reviews and meeting participation.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum master’s degree in history or a related area
  • Ten years of experience in historical administration with a portion of that experience focused on Texas history
  • Expertise in non-profit organizations, governance, financial operations, investment management, and fundraising
  • Executive communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as a peer with wide variety of non-profit organizations, university leaders, board members, historians, and museum professionals.

Salary Range: $150,000-175,000 range plus excellent benefits
