POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision by the Roanoke Visitor Center & Museum (RVCM) Manager, the incumbent serves as the first point of contact to all visitors. This position communicates information about Roanoke’s history, as well as current activities, news, tours, programs, and special events. This position is highly visible involving regular contact with the general public.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Learn and maintain knowledge of historical facts, figures, and events pertinent to the City of Roanoke and other elements related to the museum.

• Conduct tours of the facility, and convey information about museum exhibits, programs, and events to visitors.

• Ensure accurate, friendly, and timely services to visitors, vendors, and City staff.

• Process payment transactions for items sold at the facility.

• Prepare and maintain records and reports as directed.

• Assist with museum collection and exhibit care and maintenance.

• Assist with special events and programs, including food tours and City-wide events.

• Perform tasks to support the Special Event & Marketing division, including but not limited: research, phone calls, emails, event set up, event tear down, etc. Assist coworkers and other City departments as needed.

• Communicate professionally, promptly, effectively, and courteously with fellow employees and the public in writing, in person, and on the telephone.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Regular and punctual attendance is required.

• Respond outside of normally scheduled work hours in response to special events, natural disasters, emergencies, or critical incidents as determined by the City.

• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

• Excellent oral, interpersonal, and written communication skills.

• Intermediate knowledge of MS Office products.

• Ability to learn tasks and functions in multiple areas and perform those skills successfully.

• Ability to work well independently and respond proactively to issues and needs.

• Ability to utilize strong attention to detail and effective organization skills.

• Ability to work effectively in a team environment, and treat employees, co-workers, and customers with professionalism, courtesy, and respect.

• Ability to adhere to all department and City policies and procedures.

• Ability to work evenings and weekends, specifically a schedule of Tues. – Sat. 9:00am-6:00pm, as well as be flexible to work special events, programs, etc. outside of normal work schedule.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School diploma or GED. Some college is preferred.

• One (1) to three (3) years of experience in a customer service role that required active problem solving to a diverse client base.

• Must have valid Texas Driver’s license and safe driving record.

• Must pass a pre-employment screening, background check and employment eligibility verifications.

JOB DESCRIPTION

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The essential functions of this position are performed primarily in an indoor environment and in a seated position. Position requires frequent sitting, repetitive motions, lifting of negligible weights, fine dexterity and the ability to clearly see and hear. Occasional pushing, pulling, bending, carrying, lifting up to fifty (50) pounds and kneeling may be required for some duties. Must be able to use various office equipment, including but not limited to, computers, audio/visual technology, telephones, fax machines, printers, copiers, etc. Some work may be performed in an outdoor environment in which the employee may be exposed to heat, cold, inclement weather, dust, strong odors, etc. When performing work outdoors, the position requires occasional standing for long periods of time, walking, climbing, crouching, kneeling, bending. All safety guidelines must be observed and safety equipment worn where required.
