Job Description:

Position: Volunteer Coordinator 

Facility: Historic George Ranch Association dba. The George Ranch 

Supervisor: Education Manager

Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday, with occasional variances. 40 hours/week.

Pay & level: Salary Exempt / $37,000 commensurate with experience, includes benefit package with health, dental and vision options; 10 days paid vacation, 11 paid holidays and 6 sick leave days annually.

Summary of Position:

The George Ranch is a 500 acre Living History Ranch with a primary mission of educating area students on Texas history from 1830 to 1930. The Ranch hosts over 50,000 visitors and 25,000 school children each year in addition to special events, corporate events, and group tours. During the school year, the Ranch has a special emphasis on school field trips Tuesday through Friday and welcomes public visitors on Saturdays.

This position is responsible for assisting the Education Manager to execute educational programming, provide logistical support for a 15-18 person staff and develop and maintain a thriving youth and adult volunteer program. Responsibilities include creating and facilitating programming that enhances the Ranch’s mission and makes learning enjoyable, accessible, and interesting for a wide range of visitors; volunteer recruitment, supervision, coordination, and training; assisting with planning special events for the Ranch’s public programs; and working closely with Education staff to enhance the learning possibilities.

Principal Responsibilities:

1) Administration

a) Provides logistical support to Education manager and Coordinators including, but not limited to, background research and activity preparation.

b) Maintains and updates the costume database, sorts and cleans costumes and assists in ordering replacement garments.

2) Management:

a) Coordinates with Education Coordinators and Education Manager to achieve daily operational goals and special event activities through volunteer sign up and management.

b) Oversees the recruitment, training, scheduling and evaluation of Youth volunteers.

3) Interpretation/Education:

a) Assists with development and implementation of programmatic endeavors for the Ranch, including school programming, special event programming and daily family programming.

b) Works with the Education Manager and Education Coordinators to plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate a variety of interpretative programs, including regular daily programming, school programming and special event programming.

c) Works closely with staff to ensure visitor engagement and best visitor experience for a wide range of age groups.

d) Provides additional staffing and logistics support to Ranch staff when needed.

4) Other

a) Represents the Ranch as needed with organizations and individuals requesting historical knowledge or expertise.

b) Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, education, history or related field preferred

· Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking

· Experience in volunteer management or relationship building

· Ability to work both independently and as a contributing member of a peer management team with emotional stability and mature judgment

· Ability to work effectively with diverse persons and groups

· Computer literacy in basic office applications: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint

· Must be customer service oriented, be able to communicate effectively, and be organized.

· Must be able to analyze and problem solve in order to identify, research and solve a wide range of work-related problems.

Requirements:

· Must believe in and promote The George Ranch’s mission and act in accordance with policies and procedures.

· Must have ability to work effectively with diverse persons and groups.

· Must be customer-service oriented, be able to communicate effectively, and be organized.

· Must be able to foster teamwork and have good verbal communication skills.

· Routinely moves furniture, program items and other heavy equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

· Must be comfortable in an unairconditoned space and work outside for long periods of time.
