Overview of Executive Director Position - Museum of North Texas History

The Museum of North Texas History, located in downtown Wichita Falls, seeks to find their next Executive Director, dedicated to building community partnerships, sparking interest in local history, and continuing exhibit development.  

The Executive Director is responsible for strategic leadership and the overall operational, programmatic, and financial health of the Museum. Working closely with the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director is the public face of the Museum and will embrace our mission, successfully pursue and execute strategic goals and objectives and identify and execute opportunities for mission-related growth.  

Compensation:      

Salary - $45,000-$55,000 

The Museum is open to the public Thursday-Saturday 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Office hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Schedule will include some weekend hours and occasional evening hours. 

Essential Duties 

Management 

  • Provide a forward-thinking culture for the museum through effective leadership. 

  • Forge trusting working relationships with staff, board members, donors, key community members, and visitors. 

  • Oversee the daily operations as outlined in the Bylaws and Operating Policies of the Museum and delegate areas of responsibility and tasks as appropriate. 

  • Maintain museum files in an organized manner; this includes but is not limited to: membership lists/information, donor lists/information, mailing lists, Board meeting documents such as minutes and treasurer’s reports, and financial documents. 

  • Ensure proper planning documents are in place such as disaster plans, maintenance plans, interpretive plans, long and short-range plans, and other similar documents. Review and revise core documents as necessary. 

  • Supervise and manage staff and delegate appropriate authority and responsibilities while maintaining a high level of morale and providing direction and resources as necessary. 

  • Regularly attend all board meetings and serve as an advisor to the board to ensure its effectiveness in its policymaking and funding roles. Serve as liaison between the board and staff. 

  • Provide guidance, advice, and information to the Board of Directors on all matters affecting the Museum and its performance in a thorough and timely fashion. 

  • Stay current in the Museum and preservation field through continuing education and professional development. 

 

Community Outreach 

  • Collaborate with and act as liaison to other arts, historical and cultural organizations in the community and region. 

  • Cultivate an environment that encourages the public to re-visit. In performance of these responsibilities the Executive Director will: 

  • Provide information to the public and special interest groups through presentations and participation in/on a variety of meetings, events, and committees within the community. 

  • Supervise collections and programs management to ensure that the programs, exhibits, and interpretive materials are integrated and consistent with the Museums mission and goals. 

  • Create and implement community engagement programs designed to create a clear, consistent identity for the museum that will generate enthusiasm and increase audiences for its programs. 

  • Maintain a high level of energy and professionalism in terms of ethics, content of work and presentation of ideas. 

 

Stewardship and Fundraising 

  • Provide stewardship of the physical site in conjunction with Wichita County and the City of Wichita Falls, ensuring the facilities, grounds and collections of the Museum are well maintained and safe through use of comprehensive planning. 

  • Prudently manage resources within budget guidelines. Identify growth opportunities. 

  • Supports fundraising efforts of the Board including identifying potential new resources, grant writing and donor cultivation. 

 

Ideal Candidate: 

  • Previous experience in museums or preservation work and thorough understanding of museum best practices and industry standards. 

  • Any combination of education, training, or experience which provides: 

  • Understanding of museum, collections, and program management requirements. 

  • Knowledge and experience in personnel management. 

  • Experience with budget oversight and grant writing. 

  • Ability to deal effectively with the public and volunteers. 

  • Understanding of social media platforms and website management. 

  • Knowledge of museum database software such as Past Perfect. 

  • A passion for local history and love of small museums. Previous experience or a degree in museum or preservation work is a plus but not required.
