Position: Education Specialist
Facility: Historic George Ranch Association
Supervisor: Director of Education
Schedule: As needed, no more than 30 hours/week; Tuesday through Saturday
Pay & level: Part Time-$15
Summary of Position:
The Historic George Ranch Association is a 500 acre Living History Circle with a primary mission of educating area students on Texas history from 1830 to 1930. The Circle hosts over 50,000 visitors and 25,000 school children each year in addition to special events, corporate events, and group tours. During the school year, the HGRA has a special emphasis on school field trips Tuesday through Friday and welcomes public visitors on Saturdays.
This position provides assistance to full-time staff to provide credible authentic interpretive programs on the Ranch including but not limited to living history classrooms, historic house tours, and related special events.
Principal Responsibilities:
Interpretation/Education:
- Share the history of the Ranch with guests of all ages during public programing and living history classrooms.
- Participate fully in school programs as educator and instructor, handling groups of 25+ independently.
- Help provide costumed historical home tours of one of the four historic sites and ensure positive guest interactions.
- Other
- Participate in daily chores on the sites as assigned by the site leads and follow instructions given by the Education Coordinators and Education Director.
- Represents HGRA as needed with organizations and individuals requesting historical knowledge or expertise.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma required; college degree highly desirable.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking
- Self-motivated; independent worker
- Ability to work effectively with diverse persons and groups
- Relevant experience in history, living history, interpretation, or public programming preferred
Requirements:
- Must believe in and promote HGRA’s mission and act in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Must have ability to work effectively with diverse persons and groups.
- Must be customer-service oriented, be able to communicate effectively, and be organized.
- Must be able to foster teamwork and have good verbal communication skills.
- Routinely moves furniture, program items and other heavy equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Must be comfortable in an unairconditoned space and work outside for long periods of time.
General Information:
As an on-call employee, may work a flexible schedule, nights and weekends as needed.
