Museum Programs Specialist

Position Overview:

The Museum Programs Specialist is a creative and energetic individual who supports the creation and implementation of life-long learning programs through a variety of interactive, immersive, engaging, and inclusive daily and recurring programs for all general and family audiences from toddlers through seniors. The specialist will deliver engaging, fresh, and relevant content with goals of growing new audiences, providing excellent service, acquiring feedback from audiences, and inspiring interest in the aviation industry. This position will provide support for all programs and events across the museum. 

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with development of innovative aviation heritage, STEM, and career programs for all ages, including revenue-generating programs, daily floor programs, and programs series 
  • Assist with Girls in Aviation programming and the planning and execution of annual Girls in Aviation Day 
  • Create content and lesson plans, deliver instruction, and plan operations for youth day camps and summer camps 
  • Assist with content development through research, writing, and testing programs 
  • Prepare adequately in advance for assignments and execute operations including reviewing content, acquiring supplies, preparing registration rosters, loading and unloading equipment, and classroom and systems set-up 
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and upkeep of classrooms and the Aviation Learning Center 
  • Stay updated on program and exhibits content, including newly arriving aircraft, upcoming activities, and special events 
  • Provide instruction and navigation for field trips, classes, programs, and workshops, which may include an overnight stay at the museum and/or travel off site; and assist with museum-wide activities and programs 
  • Provide feedback to program managers related to content, guest comments, operational issues, supplies needs, and overall ideas to continuously improve • Participate in STEM and aviation-related community events and programs 
  • Maintain a clean, orderly and safe operating space and overall museum and exhibits care 
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential experience and background skills

  • College degree in museum studies, history, education, aviation, or STEM field preferred; applicable career and college experience may be considered in lieu of degree
  • At least 2 years of experience in early childhood or public program development and delivery in a museum, public history program, library, zoo, science center, or similar educational institution 
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering a variety of innovative and creative informal educational programs for diverse audiences 
  • Understanding of youth, early childhood, and public program best practices and museum industry standards • Knowledge of aviation and aerospace industry is preferred 
  • Effective time management skills and ability to deliver a program in the time allotted 
  • Ability to provide organized, detailed, accurate, and constructive feedback 
  • Excellent guest service skills, including ability to serve a diverse audience 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; bilingual in English and Spanish a plus 
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain a positive attitude and professional demeanor at all times 
  • Ability to initiate tasks and work independently, with a team, or under supervision, especially in an atmosphere with frequent disruptions and logistical changes 
  • A commitment to service and mission 
  • Working knowledge of computers, software, social media, and database programs 
  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time 
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds 
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments with noise, lighting variances, etc.

Work Schedule: Flexible schedule (approx. 25 hours/week) to meet museum needs including availability to work holidays, weekends, and evenings due to program, tour, and event schedules.
