About the Museum 

Lone Star Flight Museum is an aviation museum and STEM learning center with a mission to celebrate  flight and achievement in Texas aviation history and educate and engage youth through science,  technology, engineering, and math. In addition to the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame, the museum is  home to a flying collection of rare and historic commercial, general aviation, and military aircraft.  

About the Position (Unpaid Volunteer Intern) 

The School Programs Intern assists museum staff with research, development, evaluation, and  implementation of education activities, field trip content and materials, and online resources for PreK-12  students and teachers.  

The intern conducts research to further understand flight fundamentals and, especially, to connect to  content and exhibits already at the museum. The final deliverables support knowledge for students and  professional development for teachers and are to include new STEM and heritage programs on topics  such as flight principles, rockets, aircraft, spacecraft, Texas aviation heritage, STEM careers, innovators &  innovations, and the future of aviation.  

Activities may be formatted as discovery stations, presentations, design challenges, knowledge hunts,  and skill builders. The Intern will have the opportunity for experiential learning by conducting group  tours, classroom instruction, floor programs, and flight simulator operations.  

This position must work on site at the museum during standard business hours, which typically includes  some weekends. A minimum of 10-15 hours per week is preferred. Volunteers receive free museum  access, select discounts in our café and museum store, and free parking.  

About the Candidate 

The intern possesses good research skills to locate relevant content, good organizational and creative skills to develop programs, and good time management skills. The intern must have good writing skills to  draft programs that meet requirements. Previous knowledge of aviation and space flight is not required,  however, familiarity with STEM concepts is beneficial.  

A friendly disposition is needed to work with staff, volunteers, youth, teachers, diverse audiences, and  community partners. The intern must be able to tolerate busy environments and be able to work both  independently and on a team with dynamic operations. 

The intern is preferably in one of the following fields of study: Education, Museum Studies, Training  & Development, Library Science, Recreation or field related to program development.
