Job Description 

Visitor Center Manager 

The Visitor Center Manager manages and coordinates activities and volunteers of the Bastrop Visitor Center, providing accurate and up-to-date information about attractions, events, amenities, and the history of Bastrop to tourists and visitors. Responds to inquiries and promotes heritage tourism.

Visitor Center Staff & Volunteers 

 

Executive Director

Type of Position: Full time, 40 hours per week on average, including weekends and other hours as required. 

 

Functional Areas    

 

Visitor Experience 

 

  • Provides accurate information to visitors about Bastrop, providing information about special events, tourist attractions, amenities and lodging and restaurants. 

  • Provides information about the historic district and the City’s history. 

  • Assists visitors with directions and resolving any problems they may encounter during their visit.  

  • Responds to inquiries received via email, phone, and mail and assist with visitors to plan their trips.  

 

 

Visitor Center Management 

 

  • Maintains tourism demographics/statistics for the Visitor Center database, visitor contact, and other logs. 

  • Reports visitor statistics weekly to Executive Director. 

  • Responsible for accuracy of BCHS website for tourism related items. 

  • Compiles a Visitor Center Manager Update for bi-monthly board meetings.  

  • Secures, collects, and accounts for monies collected during business.  

  • Ensures the visitor center is well presented, organized, easy to use, and accessible. 

  • Answers the phone, screens calls, and takes messages for staff. 

  • Various clerical duties as assigned. 

 

 

Volunteers and Staff  

 

  • Schedule volunteers and staff to ensure six day a week coverage from 10:00 to 5:00 and later for special events. 

  • Promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning, commitment, and quality.  

  • Recruits and trains volunteers.  

  • Create and execute volunteer appreciation events and benefits. 

  • Stock volunteer snacks in break room. 

  • Track and report volunteer hours to the Executive Director monthly.  

 

 

Museum Shop 

 

  • Lead Cashier  

  • Trains staff and volunteers on all aspects of the Square sales system. 

  • Assists with shoppers’ questions and service needs.  

 

 

Tourism 

 

  • Represents BCHS as the primary heritage tourism expert   

  • Maintain inventory of tourism brochures, order new materials as necessary. 

  • Prepares and processes bulk mailing for Texas Travel Information Center  

 

 

Building Facility  

 

  • Monitor cleanliness and tidiness of the visitor center. Reports any issues to the Office Coordinator. 

  • Orders cleaning supplies and pick up as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS  

 

Education/ 

Certifications 

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree  

 

 

 

Preferred  

Experience 

 

  • Two or more years’ experience with heritage tourism   

  • Two or more years’ experience managing staff and volunteers  

 

 

Skills/ 

Abilities 

 

  • Computer and Technical Skills Requirements: Advanced computer and technical skills required in all aspects of the visitor center organization 

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, volunteer tracking databases such as Little Green Light and Bloomerang 

  • Proficient with Square purchases and inventory management system  

  • Knowledgeable in the use of Internet search engines to locate information, schedules, and other items of interests to tourists 

  • Knowledgeable about Bastrop County history 

  • Knowledgeable about area attractions, transportation, dining, hotels, and others of interests to tourists 

  • Passionate about customer service, skilled in professional and positive customer service communications 

  • Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, city departments, the business community, the news media, vendors, contractors, the general public and others having business with the Visitor Center  

  • Detail oriented with excellent organization skills 

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and enjoy working with people 

  • Must be able to work a varied shift.
