Assistant Director Position Summary 

The Assistant Director supports the Executive Director in the leadership, administration, and daily operations of the Texas Heritage Museum. This role involves overseeing selected museum programs, coordinating exhibitions and collections activities, developing educational and public programming, and supporting fundraising, marketing, and community engagement initiatives. The Assistant Director ensures all activities meet AAM accreditation standards and align with the mission and strategic goals of Hill College and Texas Heritage Museum. 

Pay Classification: 40 (minimum starting salary  $56,365)

About the Texas Heritage Museum 

The Texas Heritage Museum (THM) at Hill College is an academic museum dedicated to preserving and interpreting the experiences of Texans during wartime and the impact of those experiences today. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM)—a distinction held by fewer than 4% of museums nationwide—THM upholds the highest professional standards in collections care, exhibitions, research, and public engagement. 

The Texas Heritage Museum has been a department of Hill College since 1964 and is an integral part of the college’s culture and mission. Minimum Required Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree in History, Museum Studies, or a related field; or a combination of education and experience yielding the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Museum Studies or a related field. 

Minimum Required Experience 

  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in a museum, cultural institution, nonprofit, or higher education environment. 

  • Supervisory or project management experience preferred. 

Required Skills & Abilities 

  • Strong organizational, leadership, and time management skills. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. 

  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and multi-task with minimal supervision. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with PastPerfect museum software.  

  • Knowledge of museum standards, collections care, and exhibit development.

Essential Job Functions 

  • Assist the Director in daily management of museum operations, including supervising staff and volunteers. 

  • Coordinate exhibit development, installation, and deinstallation in collaboration with curatorial staff. 

  • Serve as assistant curator and archivist, supporting the acquisition, care, and inventory of collections and archives. 

  • Support educational and public programming, including tours, lectures, and outreach events. 

  • Manage museum social media platforms and coordinate the production of the museum newsletter. 

  • Oversee select administrative functions including budgeting, purchasing, and reporting. 

  • Assist in fundraising activities and prepare grant applications to support museum growth. 

  • Maintain and update museum policies, procedures, and strategic plans in coordination with the Director. 

  • Represent the museum at professional and community events. 

  • Ensure adherence to safety, security, and AAM accreditation standards. Must participate in the museum’s on-call rotation schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as assigned. 

  • Must be able to respond to facility alarms or emergencies on-site within 25 minutes of notification.
