Director of Visitor Experience – Full-Time Position
The McFaddin-Ward House Museum, a 1906 Beaux-Arts Colonial style mansion with original furnishings, reflects the lifestyle of the prominent family that lived in the home for 75 years and their contributions to the economic, social, and cultural history of Beaumont and the Texas Gulf Coast.
The McFaddin-Ward House Museum seeks an enthusiastic Director of Visitor Experience to oversee tours, volunteer docents, and the gift shop. The position is key to ensuring a high-quality, engaging visitor experience while upholding the accuracy, consistency, and educational integrity of the museum’s tour content.
Director of Visitor Experience
- Tours & Interpretation: Coordinate tour inquiries and bookings, ensuring seamless communication before, during, and after every visit. Evaluate and update the existing tour script in alignment with industry standards. Create new thematic tours that support organizational goals. Collaborate with the education department to align school tours with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Train staff and volunteers on content and delivery. Lead group, individual, and special tours, as needed.
- Docent Management: Recruit, train, and retain a diverse corps of volunteer guides. Maintain and update training materials; provide continual feedback and guidance.
- Track and analyze volunteer data; identify trends and recommend improvements. Plan annual appreciation events.
- Visitor Services: Oversee daily visitor center operations, including the lecture hall and gift shop. Schedule staff and docents for proper coverage. Manage opening and closing procedures; ensure safety and security protocols are followed at all times.
- Administration & Strategy: Manage department budget and resources. Collect and analyze tour and visitor data to inform decision making. Assist with strategic planning and calendar management. Serve as liaison between staff, volunteers, and the public.
- Other Duties: Support the museum’s mission and adhere to ethics and human resources policies.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of three (3) years of paid experience in a museum, cultural, or educational setting leading tours and managing volunteers.
- Bachelor’s degree in education, history, museum studies, or a related field.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Strong organizational skills with a focus on customer service and visitor engagement.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends.
- Proficiency with basic computer operations and customer relationship management (CRM) software.
- Knowledge of local history or a strong willingness to learn.
- Successful completion of a background check.

- $50,000 to $60,000 annual salary range, based on qualifications and experience
