Position Summary: The Bullock Texas State History Museum is looking for an experienced, highly creative, outgoing, wellorganized museum professional to join the team as its full-time Head of School Programs (HSP). This member of the Museum’s Leadership team reports directly to the Museum Director. The HSP works collaboratively across departments to set the vision for the K-12 school programs team, consisting of the programs manager, field trip specialists, and distance learning educators. An experienced educator in informal educational settings, the HSP brings a comprehensive understanding of K-12 Texas teacher resource needs. The HSP will have a proven record of successful office administration and supervision, providing staff oversight in onsite field trips, teacher professional development, and virtual curriculum resource development, review, implementation, evaluation, as well as state agency procedures, including budget management. As the Bullock prepares for its 25th anniversary year and America’s 250th, the right individual will help craft the Bullock’s continued strategy and sustainability roadmap for success advocating for Texas educators’ needs as part of its audience-inspired mission. 

The HSP understands that history touches every field and integrates social studies, civics, literature, history, science, art, and music in the oversight of school programs. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment that values the Museum's mission and core values, with the flexibility to adjust to changing priorities as needed. The HSP typically works a 40-hour work week, but schedule may vary depending on evening and weekend events.

  • • Provides direct supervision of Education Program staff, overseeing scheduling, evaluations, training, and daily operations.
  • • Leads planning, development, implementation, and assessment of K–12 programs, with focus on field trips, teacher professional development, and college-level curriculum support.
  • • Develops and manages annual school programming calendar, including summer and school break offerings.
  • • Researches educator needs and trends to ensure programs remain relevant, effective, and aligned with museum education best practices.
  • • Oversees Distance Learning programs and ensures historical accuracy in collaboration with curators; supervises evaluation, outreach, and class development.
  • • Manages school program budget, procurement, and field trip scholarships; monitors monthly expenditures and revenue.
  • • Cultivates partnerships with schools, universities, and educational organizations to support pre-service educators and enhance museum resources.
  • • Represents the Museum at conferences and media events; contributes to marketing, exhibition planning, and educator workshops for CPE credit.
  • • Regular prompt attendance is an essential job duty for all State Preservation Board positions.
  • • Performs all duties in a manner that promotes public confidence in the agency and its employees in accordance with the agency's high ethical standards.

Required Education and Experience:

  • • Masters degree in museum studies, public history, education, or similar degree; 7+ years of experience in a similar work environment (theater, cultural center, library, historic site) may substitute for the Masters degree.
  • • Minimum of 5 years of personnel supervisory experience, preferably in a museum setting.
  • • Minimum of 3 years developing, leading, and evaluating K-12 educational programs in a museum setting or similar cultural institution.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • • Ability to acquire in-depth knowledge of the agency's mission, programs, exhibits, and stakeholders.
  • • Skill-set to continually assess the effectiveness of programming through formal and non-formal evaluation; oversee data collection of surveys, and make recommendations to adjust programming based on audience feedback and the changing needs of the community; use tracked data to strategize ways to increase capacity, improve programs, and reach new audiences.
  • • Ability to collaborate with Museum staff and other agency divisions as needed to fulfill assigned duties.
  • • Demonstrated knowledge of budget planning and management. 
  • • Ability to display sound judgment and effective people skills in communicating with internal and external stakeholders, including Agency and Texas State History Museum Foundation colleagues.
  • • Serve effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team and responsive to stakeholders’ input; demonstrates advanced personal computer and software proficiency.
  • • Skill to contribute to the Bullock's Emergency planning process as a safety advocate for school groups.
  • • Ability to gather, assemble, correlate, analyze and report facts; devise and negotiate effective solutions and outcomes to problems.
  • • Ability to adhere to all agency policies and procedures, and to all SPB procurement rules and regulations.
  • • Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings, weekends and holidays.
