SUMMER ART CAMP INSTRUCTOR
JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Status: Seasonal/Temporary
Pay: Stipend - $800 per week
Supervised by: Executive Director
SUMMARY
With direct oversight by the Camp coordinator and ultimately ACW’s Executive Director, summer camp instructors are responsible for planning and implementing a camp that reflects your proposed description as mutually agreed upon with ACW. Instructors are responsible for teaching an age-appropriate class that inspires student’s creative processes and self-expression through learning the skills, genres and fundamentals of Art. As a member of the summer camp team, you are expected to work in cooperation with other teachers and staff.

Education
-
High School Diploma required.

Two years of college of Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Museum Studies or Art preferred.
Experience
-
1-2 years’ experience working in a classroom or camp setting.

1-2 years’ experience working with large groups of children
-
1- 2 years’ experience working in the creative arts industry

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Demonstrated experience and ease of working with a diverse population of clients

Curriculum Development
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES PRE-CAMP
• Work with ACW staff to create a comprehensive, specific, affordable list of required art materials
• Read and follow updated ACW policies and procedures
• Complete all paperwork by deadline provided
• Work cooperatively with ACW administration and staff
• Communicate any concerns or issues directly to the camp coordinator as soon as possible
• Create 5 full days of lesson plans per week upon agreement with Children’s Education Coordinator.
• Attend mandatory Camp Orientation session (incl. getting supplies from ACW to camp location).
DURING CAMP
• Follow Camp Handbook guidelines
• Be on time and ready to receive students as specified in Handbook
• Make sure attendance is taken each day
• Review medical/special need forms provided by parents
• Provide additional information to students who need extra guidance or additional challenge
• Communicate any concerns or issues about anything directly to the camp coordinator
• Be able to problem solve and adapt to the needs of students, modifying instruction as needed
• Inspire creative thinking through art examples and technique demonstration
• Provides student feedback throughout lessons
• Supervise students over snack breaks
• Give direction to Teacher Aides and volunteers and utilize their time accordingly
• Manage disruptive behavior handle disciplinary problems as described in Handbook
• Notify the Camp coordinator of issues/needs either face to face, via email or phone/text as they arise
• Ensure the safety of all the students and follow safe practices as outlined in Handbook
• Communicate effectively with camp coordinator regarding students’ needs/experience as appropriate
• Create a fun and inclusive atmosphere
• Promote teamwork and a positive work environment and lead with joy in the classroom
SUPPLIES AND CLASSROOM MAINTENANCE
• Responsible to keep classroom clean and organized, enlisting the help of students, teacher aides and volunteers to do so.
• Make sure all supplies are clean, maintained and ready for the next class
• Ensure the classroom is as clean as you found it at the end of each class, enlisting students in the cleanup process
• Communicate supply and studio needs to the Camp coordinator
• Packing up supplies at the end of camp and assisting to get them back to ACW.
