Job Title: Curator of Education

As a senior staff member, the Curator of Education provides leadership, guidance, and management oversight of the Museum’s educational initiatives, including the development of innovative and balanced programs that respond to the Museum’s mission and strategic goals. The Curator of Education ensures delivery of relevant, engaging, diverse, and inclusive mission-based experiences, digital offerings, and other educational programs at the Museum, in the community, and beyond. 


  • Essential duties and responsibilities: 

  • Plans, develops, and implements innovative art education and public programming with appropriate curriculum for diverse age groups and populations. 

  • Develops informational/interpretive/educational materials designed to enhance visitor understanding and engagement. 

  • Identifies and invites speakers such as artists, art historians, architects, and curators to present at the Museum’s public programs. 

  • Acts as a spokesperson for the Museum’s educational programs, including presenting at conferences, participating in panels, and speaking with representatives from the media. 

  • Fosters educational initiatives and curricular partnerships that complement and support the Museum’s mission. 

  • Identifies assessment tools and collects data to measure and evaluate program effectiveness; maintains statistics on program participation. 

  • Reads and researches to stay current, gain insight, and build knowledge of the Museum’s permanent collection, special exhibitions, and architecture. 

  • Recruits, screens, trains, and oversees students and volunteers working within the education and community engagement programs of the Museum. 

  • Participates in researching funding opportunities, writing grants, and related efforts to underwrite education programs. 

  • Strategizes with the Communications Department to help publicize and promote educational and engagement programs and events. 

  • Develops and monitors budgets for educational programs. 

  • Supports educational staff in their endeavors and duties. 

  • Performs related duties as assigned. 



  • Master of Fine Arts degree in Art Studio or Art History. 

  • 5+ years of experience in teaching, developing, implementing, and evaluating art programs in a museum, educational, or cultural setting. Experience with diverse audiences preferred. 

  • Demonstrated ability to take a multidisciplinary approach to education, interpretation, and content development by incorporating history, culture, and the arts to tell complex stories that include multiple perspectives in age-appropriate ways. 

  • Understanding of justice, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and diversity practices and demonstrated commitment to embedding these practices in all aspects work. 

  • Proven ability and experience in building, mentoring, and developing interdisciplinary teams that bring together a variety of collaborators throughout the Museum and in the community.  

  • 5+ years of experience supervising, managing, mentoring, and evaluating staff and volunteers.  

  • 5+ years of experience managing budgets. 


Knowledge, skills, and abilities 

  • Manage art education programming in a manner consistent with the Museum’s mission and objectives. 

  • Ability to effectively communicate with, lead, motivate, develop, and coordinate a diverse team. 

  • Confident, articulate, and professional speaking ability demonstrating expertise and enthusiasm to engage learners of all levels.  

  • Knowledge/understanding of relevant state K-12 curriculum standards. 

  • Knowledge of current best practices in visitor studies and cultural fields. 

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written and oral communication skills, combining big picture analysis with rigorous attention to detail. 

  • Effectively assess, target, and align educational and community programming with the needs and interests of diverse audiences. 

  • Establish realistic programs goals and evaluate program results. 

  • Effectively plan logistics and successfully execute museum educational events and activities. 

  • Develop and maintain strong, positive relationships with a wide range of constituencies in the community. 

  • Prepare effective budgets, reports, correspondence, and presentations. 



Physical Requirements 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.  

  • Working at a desk and utilizing a computer for prolonged periods of time.   

  • Periodic standing, walking, bending, climbing, and stooping, and the ability to lift 20 pounds. 

  • Good hearing and vision.  

  • Good eye/hand coordination. 


Salary Range: $90,000-$120,000
