Considerations for Outdoor Sculpture - Installation & Maintenance Workshop

Join this workshop for museum preparators, registrars, curators, and facilities staff responsible for installing and maintaining outdoor sculptures. Learn how to plan for installation, maintain, preserve, and protect outdoor sculptures, and gain insight from an experienced hosts. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn basic cleaning and waxing techniques on bronze sculptures at the Briscoe Western Art Museum.

Preserving History through Podcasting

Pamela Morales de Hendricks, Communications Officer & José Peña, Communications Assistant, of the Museum of South Texas History

Learn how museums can break through digital media noise and build direct relationships with audiences. Highlighting collections on social media is a great start, but collaboration with underrepresented communities is crucial for presenting history in pedagogical ways. Using a practical case study of producing a podcast, the workshop will explore identifying stories, incorporating podcast production practices, disseminating content, and using audio equipment. Don't miss this opportunity to merge modern storytelling and history.

Compelling Artifacts, Timely Topic, Minimal Resources: Let’s Do an Exhibit!

Evelyn Montgomery, Executive Director, Old Red Museum of Dallas County History and Culture; Whitney Stewart, Assistant Professor, University of Texas at Dallas; Kennedy Wallace, Lead Educator, Levi Jordon Plantation State Historic Site; Ron Siebler, Principal, Siebler, Inc.; Melanie Sanford, Principal, Conserving Threads

In this workshop, participants will plan a traveling exhibit for small museums, focusing on two quilts found in an abandoned farmhouse. The exhibit aims to present the lives and realities of African American Texans who lived in the farmhouse and surrounding settlement. Participants will discuss artifact conservation with a textile conservator, and interpretation with topic advisors, including a domestic material culture scholar. The workshop aims to offer creative solutions for interpreting compelling artifacts and minimizing costs.

Are You Who You Seem? Taking a Look at Brand and Identity

Carla Fraser, Principal and Branding & Graphics Director, Erin West, Sr. Designer/Creative Director, and Molly Morton, Sr. Brand Planner of Page, Inc.

This workshop helps participants analyze their organization's brand identity and check it against their brand promise. After establishing context and shared terminology, participants will analyze their own organization's brand identity and write a design statement with goals for a new visual identity. The session concludes with a list of resources to assist with a brand refresh.

TAM 2023 Tours


San Antonio Missions Tour 


Join San Antonio Missions National Historical Park's, Chief of Interpretation and Education, PT Lathrop, for an immersive experience in the only national park in San Antonio. PT will join us on the bus as we travel from the Witte to the park. Making brief stops at Mission Concepcion and the historic Espada aqueduct, PT will then take us on a short walking tour of Mission San Juan to see the historic landscape of acequias, labores, and a mission compound. San Antonio Mission National Historical is currently in the middle of a multi-year project of re-desigining the museum space at Mission San Juan. Gain insights into the world of federal museum design and porcess and maybe inspire future content along the way!

San Antonio African American Community Archives Museum (SAAACAM) Black History Boat Tour


Join the San Antonio African American Community Archives Museum (SAAACAM) and fellow TAM 2023 attendees on a breathtaking Black History River Tour. Our journey begins at the charming La Villita and takes us north through the scenic Museum Reach to the dazzling Pearl district. Along the way, we'll explore the rich heritage and cultural significance of African Americans in San Antonio. We'll then head back downtown, passing iconic landmarks such as the Alamo and Convention Center, before returning to La Villita. Don't miss this unique opportunity to discover the beauty and history of San Antonio's Riverwalk and uncover the legacy of African Americans in San Antonio.
